this blog post is intended for users of my private discord server.

between march 1 and march 8, the discord server will be made temporarily read-only, to test out these forums and the Mumble server. after the server reopens, i will create a thread to discuss how it went and our next steps.

why?

as you've no doubt heard (from me probably lol), Discord will be implementing age verification via government ID worldwide starting in March. i feel it's the perfect time to have people actually try the forums as an alternative to Discord.

to some extent, i also feel as if staying on Discord is, itself, sort of endorsing it, and i'm not really a fan of that.

but i don't want the Discord server to go away!

this is a temporary lock. it will be lifted on March 8.

if it's decided later that the Discord server will be closed (which will not happen until most of us are content with a replacement), it will not be deleted, just locked. a backup may be created of it later to preserve message history, but it will be made private to a user group given to everyone in the Discord server.

what if i don't care about this whole situation?

you should start caring. ID verification is, objectively, a violation of your online anonymity.

what if i don't want to leave Discord?

i'm not asking anyone to leave the entire platform. the forums are meant to be a replacement for my personal chatting Discord server specifically. while i haven't made my wish to not be on Discord a secret, i don't want to force people to make decisions that would overall destroy their online relationships.

trying to make the "I don't want to leave the platform!" argument will result in a timeout. it is irrelevant to this conversation.

will you leave Discord?

not currently. i don't really have a choice; my friends are not leaving, and some projects provide some important information only over Discord.

i might leave a lot of servers. that will not include this one, the RP server, the Tales of Celestia Discord, or any private servers with friends.

will the RP server be affected?

not right now (unless people decide to just move there, which would completely defeat the point of this test).

there is a roleplay section on the foruums for those who are interested, but it is pretty bare-bones at the moment. feel free to suggest more locations in mChat.

i don't see anything on the forums, though?

discussion channels are hidden until you sign up. this is to maintain a similar privacy level to Discord, and prevent future spam and AI scraping.

what do i get for signing up?

• discussion subforums of various topics

• a subforum with some RSS feeds for things - new articles will cause new threads to be automatically created, to which you can reply

no need to tell me. i get a notification when you register; in most cases, i will approve you instantly. check your email for a confirmation.

when the site is closed, i won't see when things are posted!

• enable push notifications. even if you don't, you'll still get emails (however, keep in mind there is a 2k daily limit for outgoing emails, so some things may be missed if we get really busy).
• you can subscribe to subforums by clicking the subscribe button near the bottom of the page.
