manual intervention required for Nvidia Pascal and older GPUs on Fedora 44

nvidia has dropped support for the pascal series of GPUs and older, including the 10 series (eg. 1050 Ti which is what i use).

the driver versions that drop this support have arrived in Fedora 44, so if you have the proprietary nvidia drivers installed from rpmfusion, and have one of these GPUs, you may have been switched back to nouveau, or your DE may have even failed to start.

you will need to revert to the latest driver that supports your GPU after the update (source):

Code: Select all

sudo dnf remove xorg-x11-drv-nvidia\*
sudo dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-580xx akmod-nvidia-580xx
Arch users already had to do this. it's only a matter of time before this change trickles down to other distros, too.

for reference, Pascal turned 10 years old last month. it was impressive that they got as much support as they did from Nvidia, so despite the company's current direction i will give them props for supporting these old parts for so long.

Blessed are the gluttonous
May they feast us to famine and war
